Teaching students from EALD backgrounds

Free sample chapter from the award winning publication

I'm delighted to show you a fantastic publication that focuses on EALD learners. It won a Highly Commended prize in the Educational Publishing Australia Awards for 2021. Here's the cover.

The book is publishing by PETAA, the Primary English Teaching Association Australia, but don't let that put you off. This book is highly relevant for secondary school teachers. So many of the strategies are useful for secondary school teachers. The topics are so relevant, including:

  • supporting new arrivals

  • scaffolding - with Jenny Hammond, one of the gurus of scaffolding

  • effective classroom talk

  • multimodal literacy

  • working with science

  • making classic texts approachable for marginalised learners.

Who wouldn't want to know about that?

Susan Feez is a friend and colleague. She was one of my PhD thesis supervisors and she knows so much about literacy education and EALD education. I highly recommend anything she puts her name to. The other authors are wonderful too: Helen Harpin, Bev Derewianka, Jenny Hammond, Carmel Sandiford, Carmel Leahy, Brian Gray, Jon Callow ... I mean, it's a who's who of literacy!

Here's a sample chapter. Click here to download it.

It's not expensive to buy from PETAA. Here is the link.

I love PETAA's resources and they inform my work in secondary schools, so you might like to check out their website for more goodies. And, as I said, don't be put off by the 'primary' in the title - this is great stuff for secondary too.
